Seitan Shawarma Sandwiches with Lime – Mint – Yogurt Sauce

XL seitan shawarma sandwiches, packed with Middle Eastern flavours!

These scrumptious vegan shawarma sandwiches are loaded with spiced seitan strips. Topped with juicy tomatoes, lettuce leaves and crispy onion slices, then slathered with a refreshing yogurt sauce with lime & mint. All your Middle Eastern dreams packed into a bun!

Spices are everything when it comes to middle eastern food. For the spiced seitan strips, I used lots of spices & herbs to create the ultimate and most authentic taste. If you like the flavours, make some extra spice mix and store in a jar ready to use.

The sandwich. You get nice chunks of well-seasoned and crispy seitan, drizzled with a zesty and creamy yogurt sauce and some crunchy vegetables in the mix. Then wrapped up in flatbread or stuffed in a soft bread roll for a delicious sandwich.  Beats take-out food any day!

All of the components of this recipe are simple to prepare, plus you can start marinating the seitan ahead in time.

I used my easy peasy chicken style seitan, but you can of course sub with store bought no-chicken pieces. Use soy curls or Portobello mushrooms for a gluten free version.

You can also add the shawarma seitan to your bowls, with some hummus/tahini and veggies. Or just on its own with a garlicky dip.

Seitan Shawarma Sandwiches with Lime  – Mint – Yogurt Sauce

vegan, nut free,  gluten free option


Makes 2 XL sandwiches:


For the Seitan Shawarma:

½ recipe easy peasy chicken style seitan 


2 tbsp olive oil

1 tbsp lemon juice

2 cloves garlic, micro planed

½ tsp cumin

½ tsp coriander

½ tsp cardamom

¼ tsp smoked paprika

⅛ tsp cinnamon

¼ – ½ tsp chilli flakes (depending on how spicy you like the shawarma)

Pepper & salt

For the Lime – Mint – Yogurt Sauce:

¼ cup non-diary yoghurt (I use coconut)

2 tbsp tahini

2 tbsp lime juice

Zeste of 1 lime

3 tbsp munt, finely chopped

Pepper & salt


2 Turkish bread rolls or flatbread 

Romaine lettuce, chopped

1 tomato, sliced

½ red onion, sliced thinly



For the Seitan Shawarma:

Cut the seitan into strips. Mix the ingredients for the marinade in a bowl. Season with salt and pepper. Stir in the seitan strips and marinate for about 4 hours, stirring regularly.

Heat a non-stick pan and fry the seitan strips until golden (a few minutes).

For the Lime – Mint – Yogurt Sauce:

In a bowl, combine the ingredients for the sauce. Season with salt and pepper. Thin with water if needed.


Slice the bread rolls in half, spread half of the sauce on top. Divide lettuce, tomato, onion and shawarma between the buns. Drizzle with some more sauce.



Notes + variations:

Gluten free? Use soy curls or sliced Portobello mushrooms instead of seitan and use gluten free wraps or buns.
